Tips if you want to limit election news: good times to check results - mid evening e.g. 9-10 pm ET and last thing at night - and reminder to vote - and it IS fine to choose not to vote - 1 in 3 don't
- thats 2 to 3 am UK time
If you want to check at particular times you could check around 9 - 10 pm ET. say. By then several states are likely already declared and the presenters will have lots to discuss.
You can convert that to other timezones in Google. E.g. that’s 2 to 3 am UK time
The first states are called between 7 and 8 pm ET. Or midnight to 1 am UK time.
The first exit polls come out at 5 pm ET onwards or 10 pm UK time. But they are not like the UK exit polls, are only small sample conducted by some media companies. They are similar to the polls with large margins of errors but with the difference that they show how voters actually voted and more representative sample.

For those in the Americas - if you are up late at night you could check a second time around midnight when many states will already be declared and it may be reasonably clear where it's going if it is a landslide either way, though without a winner declared yet. .
And if you want to limit your exposure to election news you can just leave it at that.
If you live in Europe or further East, you can just check Wednesday morning by which time many states will have declared and unless very close, it may be clear already who is most likely to win though the winner is not likely to be declared quite yet.
If you tune in before midnight in Europe, it’s not likely that they have a clear idea yet of where it’s headed but could check last thing at night, the exit polls may give some interesting information but only reliable if it’s a landslide one way or the other.

Everyone be sure to vote if you wish to - if that's your decision :). If you want to that is. Remember also it is absolutely fine not to vote in the USA.
And good idea to take a break from social media and the news too for as long as you like :).
If you need to, you can disconnect from the internet in your mobile phone and laptop and anything else for a few hours. Or use a landline to talk to anyone instead of your mobile phone, or use your mobile phone only for phone calls and texting?
When I was a kid we didn't have online news like that. There was no waiting up to hear the results as they weren't televised. Our TVs just showed a "test card" over night because there was nobody making or producing programs in the middle of the night. The first overnight TV I think was the televised landing of the Apollo astronauts on the Moon.
We would find the results of an election the next day in the papers or the midday or evening news. That is in the UK where you get the results quickly by the next day unless it is very tight. I had little interest in politics as a kid with a strong interest in science instead, so I don't actually remember even being interested in who won for most elections, I think there was one election I did follow as a kid but forget which one now. But for anyone who was interested, that is what you'd do.
So you could do that - just for a few hours not necessarily all night and then dip in at say 2 am ET. By then it may already be clear who won if it is a large swing one way or the other.
If it is tight you could then check again next morning and then the next evening and twice a day from then on.
That would be way more often than you'd have got the results in the 1960s. And few of your friends would notice if you are half a day behind in the latest news. As for when the media declare who is the winner I imagine for anyone in the USA you'll find out pretty fast without needing to monitor it every minute or hour of your waking day.
And if you don't want to vote or forget to vote - remember even when there is a massive turnout, the highest turnout ever in 2020 was 66%
It is ABSOLUTELY FINE to be one of the 1 in 3 who don't vote. Especially if making the decision fills you with anxiety or stress - e.g. anxiety about making a wrong decision - you do NOT need to do it. You fulfill your democratic duty just as well by not voting in the USA which does NOT require all citizens to vote.
There are plenty of people who are keen to vote, like to vote and who are very on top of the issues. That is the way every democracy works, even in Australia where eeryone is required by law to vote, still many don't in fact do so. That is okay too, it is still seen as the will of the people if a % don't vote at all.
Others never vote for political or philosophical reasons. Or only vote sometimes. Or decide they don’t want to vote in one particular election for political or philosophical reasons.
Or forget to vote and don't even know its election day because they have other priorities. And that also is fine. That is all just people being people and that is how democracies work :).
First vote in the US election, Dixie Notch, a tie, 3 Harris, 3 Trump.
They are able to count votes as soon as all the registered voters have voted. according to a New Hampshire state law and open for voting at midnight.

NEW SHORT DEBUNKS
I do many more fact checks and debunks on our facebook group than I could ever write up as blog posts. They are shorter and less polished but there is a good chance you may find a short debunk for some recent concern.
See Latest short debunks for new short debunks
I also do tweets about them. I also tweet the debunks and short debunks to my Blue Sky page here:
Then on the Doomsday Debunked wiki, see my Short Debunks page which is a single page of all the earlier short debunks in one page.
I do the short debunks more often but they are less polished - they are copies of my longer replies to scared people in the Facebook group.
