Hi Robert. What is to be made of Zelenski saying he's seen intelligence suggesting Russia is planning on attacking NATO next year?

Zelensky is a politician and he says strange things sometimes. It doesn't make sense.

He is one of the most straightforward politicians out there on most topics (apart of course for military secrets) but on this topic what he says is confused and self-contradictory.

He contradicts himself. He says that Ukraine needs to join NATO because countries in NATO are safe. But then he says that Russia could attack NATO. These two things aren't consistent.

The truth here is that Russia can't attack NATO and that if Putin is indeed preparing 100,000 extra soldiers it's to attack Ukraine not Poland.

The reason Zelensky says these things is to try to get his allies more involved in supporting Ukraine to hold back Putin.

He has been saying these self contradictory things for several years now. Whatever evidence he has would just be of Russia preparing for war similarly to the way NATO does - as a way to stop it. Russia can't attack NATO because it would lose quickly but it has to train its soldiers for such a war? They are there to show that Russia shouldn't be messed with not because a war like that is possible.,

Thank you for such comprehensive list and explonations. However, what do you think of Tomaž Vargazon's reply on why Russia might attack another country five years after war in Ukraine has ended.

Oh - first Putin has always said that NATO is far stronger than Russia. .

A few months ago Putin said:

QUOTE STARTS

“There is this fanciful stuff that Russia wants to attack NATO.

“Are you out of your mind? Are you as dumb as this table?

“Who made that up?! It’s nonsense, do you understand?

“It’s a bunch of gibberish!”

Also - as far as the ordinary Russian is concerned, Russia isn't at war with Ukraine. It is just a special military operation.

The ordinary Russian people believe whatever they are told. Putin just needs to tell them that he accomplished all his objectives in Ukraine and then withdrew. He already did that with Syria.

There is no need to appease Russia to give Putin a win. He just redefines whatever happens as a win by skillful use of propaganda.

In the same conference he went on to remind the West that Russia has its nukes - which seems contradictory - but he means as a deterrent. It would be as dumb as a table indeed for Russia to attack NATO but it would be similarly dumb as a table for NATO to attack Russia.

And Putin isn't dumb. When he invaded Ukraine he was misinformed, he thought he'd win in 10 days. He thought it would be easier than the 2014 invasion when Russia took over Crimea.

— So why did he invade Ukraine?

— supreme confidence in plan A from his spies

— take over Kyiv government in 2 days

— no plan B

There is no way the risk averse Putin could believe he has a 100% risk free way for Russia to attack NATO. The other way around the risk of serious harm to his regime is 100% if he does that.

He is not going to attack NATO.
